Chavutti Thirumal is massage by foot

Where is it from?

Chavutti is an oil-based Ayurvedic treatment which originated in India over 2000 years ago. Its roots are in Kalarippayattu, a traditional martial art of Kerala which focuses on physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual balance.

What happens?

You will lie on the floor and the practitioner will massage your body using one foot at a time, holding onto a rope for balance. The strokes cover the full length of the body in one strong, therapeutic sweep. Smaller, more localised movements follow and hands are used to apply the finishing touches on the arms, feet, face and head.

What are the benefits?

How will I feel

This treatment feels divine. It feels like you are being gently ironed and the knots and tension are being pushed from your body. Afterwards you will feel cleansed, more supple, positive and with better posture.

Sessions last 90 minutes and cost £40.

Thai Yoga Massage

Where is it from?

Thai massage originated in northern India more than 2,500 years ago and it is believed it reached Thailand along with Buddhism in about the third or second century BC. Its origins lie in the traditional Indian system of healing. There are similarities with Chinese acupressure and Japanese shiatsu.

What happens?

You will remain fully clothed, and will lie on the floor on a mat. The treatment starts with a foot massage and will progress around the body to end at the face. Gentle palming is interspersed with stronger thumbing to clear the energy pathways (meridians) and your body will be encouraged into some stretches that you will probably be surprised to achieve. Particular pressure points can be used in order to treat specific ailments, such as sciatica or digestive problems.

What are the benefits?

How will I feel?

The treatment is always tailored to the client. The massage part is soothing, the stretches are invigourating. Thai massage can be brutal – if you have it in Thailand – but here the practitioners are usually more kind! You will feel more supple, flexible and energised, with better posture. Aches and pains should subside.

Indian Head Massage

Where is it from?

Indian Head Massage, or champissage, springs from the Indian tradition of family grooming and has been practised for over a thousand years. It is still common for Indian barbers to give their clients a head massage and Indian women frequently massage each other’s hair, using oils to maintain the condition.

What happens?

You will sit in a chair and remain fully clothed, the treatment starts with massaging and loosening the upper back and shoulders, it then moves to the neck, head and face and finishes with some energy balancing techniques.

What are the benefits?

How will I feel?

This treatment is incredibly soothing and will lull you into a dream-like state of deep relaxation, often people say they see colours. Occasionally people feel slightly spaced out immediately afterwards because of the increased blood and oxygen circulation to the head. This clears within 20 minutes leaving you feeling more energised, less stressed and able to think more clearly.
